Does your child struggle with school? Does he or she often complain of headaches or seeing double? If your school-age child struggles with focusing on homework for more than fifteen minutes at a time, or is labeled a “non-reader” or “low-achiever” by his or her teachers, you may believe that the problem is behavioral. You may have gone to doctor after doctor looking for the reason that your child can seem so bright in normal conversation, yet struggle so much with their homework. However, in the few moments that you got to spend with each doctor before they ran off to the next patient, a satisfactory diagnosis has not been given. Maybe they assume that it is ADHD and prescribe your child Ritalin or Adderall, leaving them too tired to do their homework, and still complaining of headaches or other problems whenever they do sit down to do it.

Perhaps it’s a Vision Problem

You have probably already had a traditional optometrist give your child a vision screening. Your child may even have 20/20 vision. However, did you know that the vision screening given by most optometrists today does not test for many vision disorders? In fact, the only vision problems that this basic screening detects are nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. There are many more eye problems than just these three, however, including a whole class of vision disorders which deal with the neurological pathways between eye and brain. Many of these vision disorders—convergence insufficiency, amblyopia, and strabismus, just to name a few—can cause problems in the classroom, as they frequently affect the child’s ability to perform near work. Since approximately 80% of the learning a child does in school is performed with their eyes, any vision disorder can become a severe impediment to the child’s academic success.

The Persistent Myth

The problem that many people face when they consider the possibility of a vision disorder which cannot be corrected by standard lenses is that many traditional optometrists will be quick to say that the other disorders are treatable only with surgery, or, worse, not at all. Because they are not well-versed in the tools of developmental optometry and vision therapy, they do not see the numerous successes: Examples of children who recover from convergence insufficiency or show major improvement in amblyopia, without surgery.
